The Top Black Interior Designers Today That We Should Be Following

black interior design

For Black History Month, designers of color open up about the struggles they experience in a traditionally white industry. "Fashion, for as long as I can remember has influenced and underscored the content of my projects," says New Rochelle, New York-based Moyler on her website. Her penchant for the texture, pattern, and detail of haberdashery has led to interiors projects for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrien Brody, stores for Harry Winston, and offices for PWC and Merrill Lynch. Native now residing in Atlanta, Leah Alexander takes a global approach to interiors. Having worked for design firms from Denver to Spain and Italy (to name a few), Alexander prefers to incorporate vendors and pieces from as many places as possible for a collected and eclectic feel.

Design fans can diversify their Instagram feeds by following these talented Black designers and creatives, although there are many, many more you're sure to want to follow along the way. The work of these designers represents a wide range of styles—from high-end interiors, to bohemian-style homes, to ultra-modern apartments—so you'll find lots of design ideas and plenty of inspiration. Kelly Finley is the founder and principal designer at Oakland, California-based Joy Street Design, and joy is what she brings to each of her projects through her use of color and bold design choices. The former lawyer holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford Law School, and Emory University. Breegan Jane is an interior designer who you may recognize from HGTV's Extreme Makeover Home Edition. She's also a lifestyle expert, entrepreneur, and the author of the forthcoming children's book, Carbie.

A spacious living room featuring black walls and black set of sofa with matching black throw pillows. Luckily, the interior design firm Forbes + Masters is led by two fearless designers, Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters. Or getting creative with wall trim, Forbes + Masters isn't afraid to bend traditional design rules, such as getting creative with wall trim. Although Hilton Carter isn't technically an interior designer, he is a self-described "creator of green interiors," and his plant-filled Detroit home is now one of the most Instagram-famous apartments around. Whether you want to grow your own urban jungle, are looking for plant styling ideas (like this vertical plant wall), or are in desperate need of plant care tips, Carter's gorgeous Instagram account—and his book Wild at Home—have the answers. An interior designer and TV personality (you may recognize her from the show Home Made Simple on the Oprah Winfrey Network), Nicole Gibbons is an expert at crafting elegant designs that somehow still feel approachable.

A national treasure in his native Brazil, Sig Bergamin is a decorator and art collector with clients in the United States, Europe, and South America. A typical Bergamin project is exuberant and full of life, and the designer’s mastery of the mix has a tropical flair and modernist touches. Robert Stilin is known for effortlessly combining crisp, clean architecture with custom upholstery, antique and vintage furniture, and modern and contemporary art. Current projects include an oceanfront home in Palm Beach, a farmhouse in Connecticut, and a contemporary estate in Southern California. Founded in 2003 by Alexandra Pappas and Tatyana Miron Ahlers, this firm is ushering in stately design with a modern slant. Best friends since childhood, Pappas and Ahlers had combined backgrounds in art history, jewelry, real estate, and interiors before joining forces.

But while the world of interior design is inspiring, it's also competitive — and unfortunately lacks diversity. Many Black interior designers are all too often overlooked, despite their significant accomplishments in the field. That said, many veterans in the profession continue to pave the way for the next generation of creatives, while leaving a major footprint for others to admire and respect. A world-renowned interior designer, Vicente Wolf has published four design books. His portfolio includes the MGM hotel in Las Vegas and the Wynn Hotel in Macao, China. Anishka Clarke and Niya Bascom each bring a design sensibility that focuses on efficiency and clean, modern aesthetics to their interior design practice Ishka Designs. In a condo renovation by architect Samantha Josaphat of Studio 397 Architecture, a kitchen with a generous island opens onto a dining area. The kitchen takes full advantage of the apartment's high ceilings with upper cabinets accessible via a ladder, while the dining area has a sculptural pendant fixture that creates a sense of space and ambiance. A boldly patterned black-and-white cabinet is the star of this stair hall and entryway, which has accents of rich golds that shine against a neutral taupe wall.

Nicole Fuller Interiors is an award-winning design firm specializing in luxury interiors, product design, and art consulting. As a decorator of full-on-glam spaces, Fuller works on highly customized residential and commercial projects in the U.S. and abroad. After working as a celebrity fashion stylist for several years,  Carneil Griffin of Griffin Direction Interiors turned his eye to interiors and hasn’t looked back since. He launched his Chicago-based firm in 2013, and now divides his time between Los Angeles, the windy city, and Dallas, Texas, where he designs rich, eclectic interiors for a slew of major clients. The interiors he creates are every bit as dapper and fashion-forward as the designer himself; marked by dark and moody color palettes, luxurious fabrics, and sculptural light fixtures. Known across the globe for creating refined spaces filled with sleek silhouettes and antique décor accents, Darryl Carter has been designing bespoke interiors for the rich and famous for more than twenty years.

Maryline's work exhibits a unique cultural flair, with her designs ranging from an airy Brooklyn loft to a cathedral in her native home of Haiti. In light of Black History Month, we're celebrating a few Black designers who are changing the world of interior design. From Maryline Damour and Malene Barnett to Mikel Welch and Beth Diana Smith, these are some of the talented Black interior designers we think are worth keeping on your radar — now and forever.

While the bones of the kitchen lean toward traditional, a glossy center island and eclectic tile backsplash give this Lake Tahoe home a refined B&W feel. In a modern Tribeca loft, a grand entryway makes a statement with unique decor and surfaces in a range of textures. Named to House Beautiful's New Wave class of 2023, Malcolm Simmons Jr. knows how to blend style and substance.

The sidelights of this main door follow the lay of the arched door with glass panels framed with dark wood. The door matches the patterns of the dark wallpaper and the console table on one side that has built-in apothecary drawers. White is the most popular pair for the color black, but you can try yellow as well.
